Pharmaceutical And Medical Device Market Access In Key Asian Markets Conference, 3-4 May 2012, Bangkok, Thailand
Tue, 31 Jan 2012 08:00:00 +0100 | Health News from Medical News Today
Asian markets are increasingly the focus of pharmaceutical companies who are looking for new market opportunities beyond the traditional "rich-world" countries who are facing economic stagnation. Traditionally, more "mature" and higher income Asian markets such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong have been seen as the priority of pharma marketers, but now fast-developing, high-population countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, are increasingly the priority... Community-oriented Administration of Fluoride for the Prevention of Dental Caries: A Summary of the Current Situation in Asia.
Wed, 25 Jan 2012 06:06:31 +0100 | Adv Dent Res
Authors: Petersen PE, Baez RJ, Lennon MA Abstract Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting human populations around the world. It is recognized that fluoride plays a significant role in dental caries reduction. Meanwhile, several low- and middle-income countries of Asia have not yet implemented systematic fluoride programs; contributing factors relate to misconceptions about the mechanisms of fluoride, low priority given to oral health in national health policy and strategic plans, and lack of interest among public health administrators. A workshop on the effective use of fluoride in Asia took place in Phang-Nga, Thailand, in 2011. A series of country presentations addressed some of the topics mentioned above; in addition, speakers from countries of the region ...

Safe travels? HIV transmission among Britons travelling abroad
Wed, 25 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | HIV Medicine
ConclusionsA substantial number of UK‐born adults are acquiring HIV infection in countries with generalized HIV epidemics, and in common holiday destinations. Of particular concern is the high proportion of men infected reporting sex with a commercial sex worker. We recommend HIV prevention and testing efforts be extended to include travellers abroad, and that sexual health advice be provided routinely in travel health consultations and in occupational health travel advice packs, particularly to those travelling to high HIV prevalence areas and destinations for sex tourism. Safer sex messages should include an awareness of the potential detrimental health and social impacts of the sex industry. (Source: HIV Medicine)

Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus: a comprehensive review of molecular epidemiology, diagnosis, and vaccines
Tue, 24 Jan 2012 07:16:23 +0100 | Virus Genes
Abstract  The porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV), a member of the Coronaviridae family, causes acute diarrhoea and dehydration in pigs. Although it was first identified in Europe, it has become increasingly problematic in many Asian countries, including Korea, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand. The economic impacts of the PEDV are substantial, given that it results in significant morbidity and mortality in neonatal piglets and is associated with increased costs related to vaccination and disinfection. Recently, progress has been made in understanding the molecular epidemiology of PEDV, thereby leading to the development of new vaccines. In the current review, we first describe the molecular and genetic characteristics of the PEDV. Then we discuss its molecula...
